How can I "Shift" Word and Excel from my Old Laptop to my New Laptop?

Hi,

I had bought an Office Package with Word and Excel 2010 along with my present laptop.

I am now buying a New Laptop, and want to know :

How can I "Shift" the Word and Excel from my Old Laptop to my New Laptop?

Look forward to answers.

Regards,

Saeed

Depends on exactly what license type you purchased.

If an OEM license supplied by the original laptop maker, or a KeyCard license you cannot as both are tied to the original PC

You can only 'transfer' a full retail licensed version to the new PC, and you do that by installing using your original Office installation media and its Key

Palouk has answered the legal part.

The practical part is that you either need the original disks or a transfer cable and software. I transferred my settings and software using PCMover software and cable. It worked fine but took about 20 hours. That was a transfer from Windows Vista to 8.1.

For those who might be curious, yes, my license allowed me to do this.

For me, the key thing is that I was able to transfer my settings and directory structure along with most of my programs.

Hi Palcouk,

It was not "pre-loaded" by the manufacturer. I had bought it separately on a separate CD and then installed it on my Old Laptop. I still have the CD from which I had loaded it onto my Old Laptop.

Does this makes it possible to shift to the new laptop? and if so, what is the physical procedure? and do I need to have both the laptops physically connected at the same time?

                                                                       Or

Will the Office CD (that I still have) be able to do the job? without the need of any additional cables?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Saeed

You first uninstall any office trial on the new PC, then insert your Office cd and install

The DVD will do it so long as you have your product key.

I used the PC Mover because it also transferred my user settings and the settings for Word.

Thanks Charles,

I still have the old CD/DVD package which I am sure will carry the product key.

Where do I go from here?

Q1) Do I insert the DVD first into the Old Laptop and "then" in the new laptop one at a time?

Q2) Where do I get PC Mover from? and which laptop do I download it onto ?

Q3) Do I need to physically connect both the laptops (old and new) with some file-transfer cable?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Saeed

Q2)  I bought mine at Best Buy because I wanted the cable. In my first post, the name is a link to the website. Here it is again: PCMover

Q1) If you are using PC Mover you do not need the DVDs. If you are not, you insert them into the new laptop. After you are done, unless your license allows more than one installation, uninstall from the old one. You will not need the disks to uninstall. This uninstall step is also for using PC mover.

Q3) You can get the cable with the PC Mover program and I would recommend it because it is faster and easier than other connections. The program comes with pretty good directions.

Not physically connecting the computers would not work with PC mover but the connection can be via USB or network cable I believe.
