Hi Peggy,

Thank you for posting this question in the Microsoft Community.

As I understand you’re facing issue working with Excel.

  • Please describe ‘Getting visual basic automation error unexplained error in Windows and Excel’
  • Are you referring to facing issues with Microsoft Word as well?

Follow these steps and check if it helps:

Step 1: Try Working in Excel safe and check if it helps.

To know how to start Outlook in Safe mode, follow the steps below.

Go to Start > Copy and paste the following command line in the‘Search programs and files’ box and Press Enter.

Excel /safe

For Word:

Winword /safe

If Excel safe works as expected, disable the add-ins as suggested below:

  • Click on File menu.
  • Click Options.
  • Click Add-ins.
  • Click on Go button besides Manage: Com-Add-in.
  • Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the checkbox to disable them.
  • Close the Excel and restart it.

Note: In case you are facing the issue with the Microsoft Word as well, try disabling the add-ins for Word as well.

Step 2: Clear the Excel Startup folder.

Clear the files from Excel startup folders from the locations mentioned below:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLStart

C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Note: Take a backup of files before deleting the files.
