Files opening with wrong program

All my files are opening with Word. If it is a PDF file it will open with word it seems that Word might be the default. My question is how do I set up my files to open in the format that they came in. I want it so a word doc. will open in word and a pdf will open with adobe and so on. How do I do this?
It appears you are having "Windows File Association" problems.

The simplest way to fix Office programs is to do an "Office Repair".

For other programs, some have an option "somewhere" in the menu/ribbon that lets you specify that it checks it is set as default each time the program starts. 

Finally, you can go directly into Windows to set the defaults for each file type.
