Bookmark option in SEQ field

Hello,

in the SEQ field there is the option of using [Bookmark].

yet I can't figure out what to expect.

A. The SEQ refers to an existing bookmark. So it is a reference to a bookmark and a SEQ field.

Let's say I have a bookmark 'TEST1' defined (some text in the document). Maybe putting the bookmark in the sequence makes it possible to reference the bookmark. E.g. if i ctrl+click on the SEQ field I would go to the bookmark.
Problem: No 'ctrl+click' tip field is shown when my mouse hovers over the seq field. If i ctrl+click it nothing happens.

B. The SEQ is the bookmark. So it is at the same time a bookmark and a SEQ field.

Problem: if I give the SEQ a bookmark name (e.g. SEQ MySeq \* ARABIC NewBookmarkName)  I get: Error! Bookmark not defined.

So now I'm wondering what is the use of the bookmark option in the SEQ field and how to use it?

Thanks for any advice!

Bart

Answer

Your proposal A is closer to correct, but still not right.

The bookmark is one that you apply through the Insert > Bookmark dialog; it doesn't exist "inside" the SEQ field as you tried in proposal B. The intention is that you apply the bookmark to some other SEQ field elsewhere in the document. The example described in the documentation involves bookmarking the SEQ field in the caption of a picture. The SEQ field that contains the bookmark's name then repeats the number displayed inside the bookmark.

This kind of field has no hyperlinking capability. If that's what you want, then use the References > Cross-reference dialog. Set the "Reference type" dropdown to "Bookmark", leave the "Insert reference to" dropdown set to "Bookmark text", and select the name of the bookmark that you applied to the target of the cross-reference. By default, the "Insert as hyperlink" box is checked.
