If you are trying to change the look of the TOC, modify the built-in TOC styles. TOC 1 controls the appearance of level 1 entries, TOC 2 controls the appearance of level 2 entries, etc.
On the other hand, if you want the TOC to include other styles in addition to the built-in headings, you can change the "Outline level" for one of these styles to something other than "Body Text."
