Embedded images from RTF emails (Outlook 2010) sent to OneNote (2010) not showing in OneNote (2010)

Hi All,

I must be missing a setting, but when I send an email (RTF format, HTML works fine) from Outlook 2010 to OneNote (using the Outlook 2010 button) it does not include embedded images that were in the original email when it gets to OneNote...

Attachments come through, but if the image is embedded it does not show up when sent to OneNote?

How can I fix this?

What happens? Do you get the image holder with the actual image?
Or does it show a red x ?

It simply omits the images. No red x, no placeholder of any sort. No indication that there ever was an image!

I have tested this on a few PC's in my office and they all have this same issue.

My steps to reproduce:

1) Send an RTF email with an embedded image using Outlook 2010 (although I    suspect any RTF email will do this....)

2) When the email arrives open it and hit the Send To OneNote button

3) The email will be sent to OneNote but will only contain text and any links that were present, no images whatsoever.

Only an idea:

Before sending to Onenote change the mesage format:

In the message window, on the Format Text tab, in the Format group, click HTML

Unfortunately, and please correct me if I am incorrect, but I believe you can only do what you suggest (changing the message format)  when sending emails, not once received.

My issue is that other team members send me emails as RTF rather than HTML. I cannot locate the Format Text Tab on received emails, only when sending.

But I do thank you for replying!

Q: What if I hit reply, switch the format to HTML then just send that reply (unsent)  to OneNote?

A: The reply omits the images when switching from RTF to HTML in the reply so even this didn't work.... Outlook replaces the image with the following text :

 ( << OLE Object: Picture (Device Independent Bitmap) >>)

bummer!

But your idea did give me hope  :)

Hmmmm ...

  1. Do your sending team members use MS Word as text editor ?
  2. Where does those pictures come from (file, copy from other Office application or link from a server) ?

Thank you for helping me!


  1. Yes, my team uses MS Word as our text editor (and Outlook 2007 and also 2010 for email which uses Word too)
  2. The images come from various sources. Some users use the "Print Scrn" key to copy their screen (as an image) and paste the image into the RTF email. They also use the nifty "Insert Screen Clipping" feature that comes with Office 2010 (love that btw!). For embedded images in our email it is almost always via a copy/paste method where the image originates either from "print scrn" key press or a simple copy/past from a website (our apps are mostly web based).

Could one of your team switch (for testing) to sending HTML instead of using RTF ?

All but a few of my team do send their emails as HTML, and images come through great when sending the email to One Note!

It is really the boss (and two others) that use RTF emails (why, I don't know).

While we are on the testing subject, may I ask you (and anyone else reading this) if you are able to send an RTF email, with an embedded image, to One Note and see the image in One Note?

I can only test at my office, and for us, it never works (i.e. the image does not show in OneNote). I am just wondering if anyone can do an outside test and either confirm or deny this issue.

I wouldn't have asked for an experiment if I could test it myself. But I actually don't have Outlook.
Used it for many years in the past.
