Word 2007; the normal.dotm is 'corrupt', then change it.

I have a problem in word 2007; the normal.dotm is 'corrupt'.  I search for the file to delete it to no avail.  I would like the original default back and then make a few changes.  Where can I get the default?

The default location is C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

If you do not see the AppData folder, in Windows Explorer, click on the Organize drop down and then on Folder and search options and in the Folder Options dialog, go to the View tab and select the item "Show hidden files, folders, and drives".  While there, it is a good idea to uncheck the box of "Hide extensions for known file types".

If you rename the normal.dotm file to oldnormal.dotm and then re-start Word, it will create a new one with the default settings.

I did this and reopened word but it brought back the bad normal.dotm file with incorrect features.

You did not do this with Word closed.

Quit Word completely by closing ALL open documents. Then try the procedure that Doug provided again.

word was closed with no open documents.  the only thing opened was internet explorer.

What makes you think that the Normal.dotm is corrupt?  If you did rename the original one and re-started Word, Word would have created a new one.

I need product key for Office Home and Student 2007. I bouth CD in the store but I didnt give

that. Help me If I paid I cant use the program.

This question has nothing to do with this thread and would have been better in a new thread.

The product key is on the disc packaging for Office 2007 bought on CD. There is no other record of it.

If you have it installed on as PC you can get the key using Belarc Advisor - http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html  on that PC.

I never got the cd's; it was installed when I got the laptop.  I did the Belarc.  Am looking for the key.  Found word under software but where is key and where do I put it when I find it?

when I say corrupt, it comes up with none of the options I usually get/use.  When you first put your response out there, I did the rename (without word open) and then opened word but it still had 'funky' params;  ie: calibri (body), 11, normal spacing, etc.  And when I open word, the top 'recent' item is normal.dotm.  So it is either not creating a new one, or the default isnow something 'funky'.

You have to close all open Word documents before you rename the Normal template. Otherwise a copy of Normal is still in memory and that will be the one used.

So quit everything and then rename Normal.dotm to oldNormal.dotm and then test.
