Word 2007 Save as Not responding

Just within the past few days I am not longer able to Save or Save as a new document.  The file opens and then become a not responding box.  I have Windows 8.  I will also say when I would open Windows I'd get a 2nd window of word open and then when I'd close the doc I was working on and then the other doc it would same something about the normal template or something like that (It isn't doing it now).  The problem is only with word not excel or publisher.

I have read through the forums and can't seem to find an answer I understand how to fix.  With the Windows 8 I can't find  the Run command to check the safe mode I see suggested sometimes.  Not a complete computer guru here.

The shortcut Windows logo key + R should open the Run dialog box even in Windows 8 (as far as I know). Note that you can also start in Safe mode by holding the Ctrl key as you start Word normally; when prompted for Safe mode, click yes.

Ok I did that and tried this
  1. Exit all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  3. Type the following command, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running, and then press Enter:
    • Word 2007 and Word 2010:
Windows Vista or Windows 7: ren %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm OldNormal.dotm
  4. Type exit, and then press Enter.
  5. Start Word.

Which still didn't work, saving a new Word doc resulted in the save as box showing a not responding message again.  So I'm back to square one - I have no idea why I can't save new file in Word only, I can edit and save old one and have no issues with excel or publisher.  I tied to repair Word with the installation discs and even uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail.

Let's take a step back here... What happened when you ran Word in Safe mode? Did it work properly? If it did, renaming the Normal template is only one thing you should try. You should also troubleshoot add-ins as discussed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us/.

Safe mode did the same issue.  I have no idea what add-ins are an how they would have been applied.  I tried to do the FixIt and it said This troubleshooter does not aply to your system.

This points back to an add-in being the culprit, but it's a bit worrying that Safe mode didn't improve the situation (even temporarily, during the testing).

Earlier you wrote that the FixIt (from the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us/) didn't work for you. Did you try any of the manual steps then? Look at the sections that refer to startup/template add-ins as well as COM add-ins.

I didn't becasue I barely know what I'm doing when it come ot Run commands and have no idea what anything on that page meant. I tried this: Exit all Office programs. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running: Word 2007: Click Start, click Run, type %programfiles%\Microsoft\Office\Office12\Startup\, and then click OK. But it said is couldn't find this. an autofill did this %programfiles%\Microsoft Office\ for I added the other stuff at the end %programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\Startup\ and it still didn't find it. This is really frustrating. Why won't uninstalling it clear up this ****.

If you look in the %programfiles%\Microsoft Office folder, which subfolders do you see in there?

I just discovered this problem with my week-old HP running Windows 8 and Office 2013.  I have no special add-ins or anything that didn't come as a default for any of my installations. I started in safe-mode with no change.  Same problem is occurring in Excel and via Windows explorer.   And I just spent a half-hour creating a Word document that I need to use first-thing in the morning, and as a result of the save-as problem, it's all lost.  Looks to me like it is a fix that Microsoft needs to fix right away.  I am at a loss as to what to do except to go back and use my old Windows 98 computer that has been humming along for a long long time without any difficulty.   Would appreciate knowing a definitive solution that I can implement in a short amount of time.
