My Microsoft Word 2007 has stopped working

I have been using it quite happily for years. Since yesterday, whenever I tried to open a Word document, I get a message from Windows Installer saying 'preparing to install'. 

I have tried restarting the computer, and also uninstalling the latest installed updates.

Please help. Word is vital for my work.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

I have found that a trial version of a newer Office had been installed (in a sinister way because I certainly didn't do it, and this is my laptop). When the 30 days of the free trial was up, all versions of Office on my computer were uninstalled, meaning that I had no Word.

I don't understand how this could have happened. But life must go on and I have downloaded one of the free compatible programs to allow me to continue with my work.
