In a new blank document, open the header area for editing (or the footer area, if that's where you want your page numbers to print). If you want the numbers to appear at the center or at the right margin, press the Tab key once or twice to position the cursor
in the correct place. Then press Alt+Shift+P to insert a page number field. Close the header or footer.
In the main part of the document, insert enough page breaks to make the new document have the same number of pages as the previously printed one. If there are a fairly small number of pages, press Ctrl+Enter to insert the breaks. If there are many pages,
it will be quicker to do it this way:
- Switch to Draft view.
- Click the ¶ button on the Home tab to display nonprinting characters.
- Press Ctrl+Enter two or four times, each one appearing as a dotted line containing the words Page Break.
- Press Ctrl+A to select all the breaks, and Ctrl+C to copy them to the clipboard.
- Press the right arrow key to move the cursor to the end of the document.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste from the clipboard. You now have twice as many page breaks as before.
- Repeat the Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, right arrow, Ctrl+V sequence until there are enough pages (as shown in the status bar at the bottom of the Word window).
The result is a document with pages that are blank except for the page numbers.
Now reinsert the printed document into the printer, and print the page numbers on it.
