This is an informative post on how to add support to Office 2007 for the following bibliography styles:
If you are using Word 2010, just install SP1 and ignore this article!!!
With the release of Office 2007, Microsoft introduced the bibliography and citation feature to Word. Among the styles offered where APA 5th edition and MLA 6th edition. The organisations responsible for those styles issued an update to them in 2009 but Microsoft never made the new styles available for end-users up til now. With the release of Word 2010 SP1, Microsoft finally introduced updates for APA and MLA as well as two new styles. Unfortunately, the styles are not made easily available for Word 2007. The rest of the post explains how you can make the styles available in Word 2007. If you are already using Word 2010, just install SP1 and ignore this post.
1) Getting the necessary files
a) The lazy way (only for the EN-US version)
Download them from
If none of the above links is reachable or valid, you can still extract the files yourself following 'The hard way'.
Note: only the user interface definition for the English (US) version is included, for all other versions, you will have to do the extraction yourself from the specific language pack as described in 'The hard way'.
b) The hard way
Visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2460049 and from one of the links under method 2, get yourself a standalone executable with Office 2010 SP1. I downloaded the 64-bit version but both versions should work in the same way. The download is a pretty large file and you will only need a small piece of it, but there is no other way than downloading the entire thing.
Once you downloaded the file, open a command prompt and navigate to the directory where you stored the file. There type the name of the file followed by "/extract:". So in case of the 64-bit version you would type:
officesuite2010sp1-kb2460049-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:
Give it some time and the program will start presenting you with a dialog box. Using the dialog box, select a folder where you want to extract the exe to. Once selected, the program will automatically extract all files to the selected directory and exit.
Next, download the "Patch file extractor" from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/heaths/archive/2006/04/07/571138.aspx . A link to the extractor is provided at the end of the article (http://hstewart.members.winisp.net/downloads/msix.zip). Extract the zip file and retrieve the msix.exe file from the release folder. Put it inside the folder where you just extracted the Office 2010 SP1 to.
Create two new folders on your hard drive. Those are the folders to which we will extract the styles and bibform files (or at least their compressed version). I used the names "ExtractedStyles" and "ExtractedBibform".
Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory with the extracted SP. There type
In my case, I used:
Note: the above example is for the en-us version of Office. If you are using Office in a different language, you should also download the language pack for SP1 (languagepack2010sp1-kb2460043-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe or whatever your language is) and extract it. Inside you should also find an officesuitemuisp1-xx-yy.msp which you should extract as described above.
When the process is finished, both folders will contain several mst-files and one patch_cab.cab. It is that last one we are interested in.
Using Windows explorer, you can open the cab files. Open the one in the ExtractedStyles directory and retrieve the following 4 files from it:
Next, open the one in the ExtractedBibform directory and retrieve the following file from it:
Note: if you are working with a different language, the file BIBFORM.XML will have a different number attached to it at the end (e.g. BIBFORM.XML_1096).
You know have all the files you need to make Word 2007 support the new styles.
2) Installing the files
These steps explain where to put the different files you obtained in step 1.
a) Adding the styles
In Windows Explorer, browse to the folder where Office 2007 is installed. This is the folder where winword.exe is located.
In that folder you will find a subfolder named "Bibliography" which in turn has a subfolder "Style". Put the files with extension XSL in the folder.
If you are using a default installation of Office 2007 on a 32-bit Windows installation, the folder would be "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Bibliography\Style".
This completes the part of adding the styles to Word. If you would start Word now, the new styles will be available on the dropdown in the "References" tab of Word 2007.
b) Updating the user interface
In Windows Explorer, browse to the folder where Office 2007 is installed. This is the folder where winword.exe is located.
Take a look at the last four digits of the BIBFORM.XML_xxxx you retrieved from step 1. You should see a subdirectory in Windows Explorer with the same digits. Open the folder. In it should be a BIBFORM.XML file. Rename if to BIBFORM.XML.OLD. Next copy your BIBFORM.XML_xxxx to the directory and remove the _xxxx at the end so that it becomes BIBFORM.XML.
If you are using a default English (US) installation of Office 2007 on a 32-bit Windows installation, the folder would be "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\1033".
This completes the part of updating the user interface in Word 2007. When you now add or edit a source, the new fields like DOI will become available.
Note: if you don't see the fields, make sure "Show All Bibliography Fields" is selected at the bottom of the edit dialog.

No, Answers doesn't have "Discussions," only Questions (which of course require Answers).
If you look at the questions that are pinned at the top of the forum, you'll see that even the moderators don't always get things right. A "straw man" question answered by the person who posted it, with the reply then marked as the answer by another moderator, looks very fishy. At least the most recent one has a question posted by one moderator and answered by another!
I didn't write the original post, but the links all appear live to me. Are you saying that some of them now give an error or lead to the wrong place?
