alt f9 view field codes not working

Hi can somebody help me please?

The Alt F9 shortcut - ViewFieldCodes is not working in Word.

I have reset the keyboard shortcuts within Word even though the ViewFieldCodes was showing ALT F9 as the shortcut keys.

Both Alt and the F9 key work for other shortcuts e.g. Alt F11 works and Shift F9 works.  It just appears to be the combination of ALT + F9 key that doesn't.

It doesn't work on my laptop keyboard nor does it work if I plug a keyboard in.

Any ideas please as I use the toggle fields option.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

Sharon

It is likely that another program - not related to Word - has hijacked that keyboard shortcut. On my own computer, some other program has hijacked the Shift-F9 to toggle a single field display.

As a temporary workaround, try adding another shortcut to the command.

The most straight-forward way to figure out which program is causing the problem is to unistall other (probably non-MicroSoft) programs one at a time and see if it helps. Someone else may have run into this and may be able to suggest programs.

Another method would be to check the documentation / help files on your other programs for that key combination.

I can now see what has happened.  When I have tried to reassign the key in Word when you press the ALT button it brings in the ALT+CTRL when just pressing the ALT.  Not sure how this has happened but does anybody know how to change the ALT button back to the default of just the ALT function please?

Does this only happen in Word? Does it happen in non-Office programs?

Office 2007 changed the Alt key a little in that it now acts not only as a modifier (like the Shift key) but also kind of like a sticky key. When you just press the Alt key it triggers the menu shortcuts.

Not really sure of that will have to check as I can only say I use the ALt key function within Word.

CTRL, ALT & DELETE work to lock the computer

Any time I want to assign an ALT button within Word ALT + CTRL appear.

I have reset the keyboard in Word but it doesn't appear to have cured it.

This could be a keyboard setting, reassigning the particular shortcut. If you have an Fn (Function) key or something similar, try pressing it. For more information, check the documentation for your PC. You could try a different keyboard, of course, to confirm that the problem is in fact keyboard-related.

I looked for a while and using hints here this worked for me:

My keyboard has the F1-F12 keys assigned icons (lock, airplane mode, etc).  When I hit Ctrl, Fn,and F9 it does the Ctrl-F9 feature.  When I hit the Alt, Fn and F9 it does the Alt-F9 feature.  So sub the words Ctrl-Fn-F9 for Ctrl-F9 and Alt-Fn-F9 for Alt-F9 and it may work.
