Why PowerPoint team, why?!

Dear MS PowerPoint product team,

Why ...

Why does the increase / decrease indent auto-styling not work properly in AutoShapes?

Why can I not set Ribbon entry to have keytip=""?

Why can custom COM Add-in not link to F1?

Why can Arrow not have a style independent from Line?

Why is ShapeFreeform not available as an idMso?

Why does the Freeform no longer allow for Shift?

Why is the Format Painter double-click feature not available as an idMso?

Why are text align top, middle and bottom not available as an idMso, only the entire menu?

Why is there no API for SmartArt?

Why does Excel lose an style information when all data deleted?

Why can I not default and/or suppress the "Convert to Excel" message?

Why does the formatting of my graph change when I say "Convert to Excel"?

Why can I not specify "Keep source formatting" when pasting via Interop?

Why can I not specify my paste preference, e.g. "Keep source formatting", as a default in Options?

Why when specifying "Keep source formatting" does the formatting still change?

Why, when using Reuse slides, can I only click one slide at a time?

Why can a table not take a grayscale mode?

Why can I no longer ungroup a table?

Why can SmartArt not take a grayscale mode?

Why do I need to select two or more shapes before being able to select "Align Selected Objects"?

Why does the Format Painter only understand the first text level?

Why can a blank.potx not receive a preview picture so I can see it when using New?

Why can I not save "High Quality Printing" in the document so that my customer prints it correctly, i.e. with shadows?

Why does a Final document still show placeholders, they can never be used?

Why does a cell table with no border still think it has a 1px border when aligning with AutoShapes?

Why does a table need to have a different selection graphic than AutoShapes?

Why is it so hard to use the No Border pen on the outside borders?

Why can I not just choose banding for a table without it changing the rest of the table, e.g. borders?

Why can I not pick my own color for table branding?

Why, through Interop, can I read the HSL color info but not set it?

Why does Esc not longer deselect the objects?

Why are the internal margin calculations different in 2007/2010 so presentations loaded in PowerPoint 2003 do not look correct?

Why does the Print menu not have Page Setup?

Why do text boxes with a single base shadow have odd faint black lines on the left and right when printing?

Why can I no longer do straight lines with the freeform tool anymore?

Why can I no longer uniform picture crop with CTRL?

Why can I no longer suppress having multiple slide masters in a document?

Why does a PowerPoint 2003 template gain additional layouts when opened in PowerPoint 2007?

Why can I not read information from a layout only from the slide master?

Why does the recolor picture now put a semi-transparent colored layered on the picture rather than actually recoloring it?

...

When the Ribbon is such a tough selling point for corporate customers, why make it so hard for us to convince users to upgrade?

This is a great list!

Some of these things are doable, though. For example, this one -- "Why does Esc not longer deselect the objects?" -- ESC does deselect the objects here. Are you sure you had the shape selected and not just have your cursor inside the shape (like in the text)?

I'll try to look through the list and find the couple of others I noticed that are doable.

Oh, I can tell you that the Print menu doesn't have Page Setup because you don't want to change your page setup in PPT at print time. It's not like changing the page margins or page size in Word. If you change the orientation or page size (4 x 3 to 16 x 9, for example), all the stuff on your slide will become distorted.

> Why can I not set Ribbon entry to have keytip=""?

The're now called screentip or supertip.  Look up RibbonXML and screentip in google for some examples.  Does that help?

> Why can Arrow not have a style independent from Line?

An arrow IS a line.  It just has line ends that aren't null.

> Why does the formatting of my graph change when I say "Convert to Excel"?

MSGraph is a different application with different defaults etc.  Convert To Excel converts your MSGraph objects to Excel 2007 objects, which do look very different.  It might be better not to convert them if this is an issue.

>> Why can I not specify my paste preference, e.g. "Keep source formatting", as a default in Options?

A LOT of people want to know the answer to THAT one.

>> Why when specifying "Keep source formatting" does the formatting still change?

Under what circumstances?

>> Why, when using Reuse slides, can I only click one slide at a time?

You can right click and insert ALL slides at once but, yep, that's not the right answer.  We should be able to use Shift and Ctrl to select whichever slides we like.

>> Why can a table not take a grayscale mode? andWhy can SmartArt not take a grayscale mode?

Basically, tables just aren't fully cooked.

>> Why do I need to select two or more shapes before being able to select "Align to Shape"?

Where do you see Align to Shape?  Align Selected Objects, maybe?  The idea there is that PPT will align one or more other objects to another object. You can't align one object to another unless you have two of them selected.  What are you trying to do that you're having trouble with?

>> Why does the Format Painter only understand the first text level?

It's not all that sophisticated ... it only stores one set of formatting attributes.  It'd sure be nice if it could remember more than one.

>> Why can I not save "High Quality Printing" in the document so that my customer prints it correctly, i.e. with shadows?

It's a presentation-level setting rather than part of the print dialog, and all you can store is stuff that you can choose on th print dialog.  But I agree.  A) it'd be far better if you could choose High Quality on the print dialog rather than having to go diving for it.  And then it could logically be one of the saved print settings for a document.

> Why does a Final document still show placeholders, they can never be used?

Anyone can mark the document as not final again.  Marking it as final isn't a form of protection, other than warning users that you've asked them not to mess with it.  In any case, the placeholders won't appear when viewing the presentation in slide show or printing it.  Fill in the rest:  why's this a problem for you?  We can take that to MS.

They still don't allow a zero length tip. I think that is what the OP is looking for. The screentip and supertip require text of atleast 1 character.

>> Why can Arrow not have a style independent from Line?

> An arrow IS a line. It just has line ends that aren't null.

Or looking it a different way: An arrow is a triangle shape connected to a line with the connector being a point. You would want the arrow to have its own formatting.

Since it is marked as final, can PPT atleast stop showing that new text can be added. It is confusing to see a text that tells users to "click to add title" but then they cannot unless they do an additional step of remove the final marking.

> Why can I not set Ribbon entry to have keytip=""?

The keytip attribute in the ribbon xml specifies the key sequence (shortcut) that can be used to access the function. When none is supplied then the RibbonX design states that it is automatically assigned one. Why?

Why can I not tell the interface not to assign one. Firstly, it is taking options and functionality away from the UI designer and secondly it can actually confuses the user.

As the world moves to wide-screen monitors, it becomes more natural to fill the ribbon rather than leaving over 50% of it not used - why force the user into another click to another tab. In the list of available functions then, I cannot highlight which ones are actively given key sequences and which ones have not.

> Why can Arrow not have a style independent from Line?

In a corporate design world, an arrow is an independent element from a line, it has its own rules as to the end type and end size. At present a user has to remember these. Why? Why cannot this be part of the template similar to setting the defaults for a Line or AutoShape

> Why does the formatting of my graph change when I say "Convert to Excel"?

Yes I agree that Excel is different from MS Graph but why is it that very basic things do not come across.  From example, if I set my axis to gray, why do they convert to black.  Surely that is relatively simple to persist!

Also, I agree that it would seem logical to say OK, I understand that I should not convert but then let me suppress the message.  The only option I have at present is the reg key that forces everything to MS Graph but then, if my client has sent an Excel chart, I cannot open them!

> Why, when using Reuse slides, can I only click one slide at a time?

Exactly! If the UI looks like the Slide Outline view then make it behave in the same way. Let us be able to use Shift or CTRL to pick the slides we want. When working with files with 150+ slides and bringing 30 across, this is unusable.

> Why do I need to select two or more shapes before being able to select "Align Selected Objects"?

The common use case is that you work in the mode of Align Selected Objects. On a rare occasion you switch to Align to Slide. Now in PPT2003 Relative to Slide was a toggle; turn it on, do the work, turn it off. Now you cannot turn it off, you have to select at least two shapes (just for the command to activate) and then use it

> Why does a Final document still show placeholders, they can never be used?

This is a expectation of a customer who has been sent a "Final" presentation. They look at it and wonder why there are items on the page which say "Click to add ...". Its pure usability; if it cannot actually be used, why show it.

> Why does the Print menu not have Page Setup?

This seems like a minor thing but in terms of training it is huge. Page Setup has been next to Print in the Microsoft menus for decades, its the natural place to look.

> Why does Esc not longer deselect the objects?

Select a set of AutoShapes on a slide. If you want to deselect an them then currently (PPT2007) need to click another location. In PPT2003 you could press Esc. On a highly detailed slide, when working zoomed in, there is often nowhere you can click that will not select an object. Thus the requirement for Esc and the pain of its loss.

Are you working with the Align Selected Objects button on the QAT? If so, then I know what you mean. What you have to do is also add Align to Slide to the QAT. You can click that and then unclick Align Selected Objects. It's a hassle, a usability issue, but not exactly a bug. These buttons should be toggles, but they're not. They also don't work together, exactly. I reported that to MS quite awhile ago, but I will definitely remind them of this, because it's a PITA.

For what it's worth, Esc works as it should in PPT 2010. PPT 2007 had a lot of stupid stuff like this, and it's all incredibly annoying.

I HATE the Reuse Slides pane. I have said since PPT 2007 Beta that whoever designed that pane never even talked to a PPT user, much less ever understood how the thing SHOULD work. I don't know what that person/team was thinking -- and I think that they WEREN'T thinking. Reuse Slides sucks.

Actually I supply Align Selected Objects on a task pane of useful tools in similar way to a PowerPoint 2003 toolbar.  Here it is totally broken as the idMso does not even recognise that it is a toggle button.

Why it needed to be changed though from one simple on/off to two functions I do not know.

Some more table annoyances added!

People really ask, why are we bothering to upgrade.  The answer most of the time is: Outlook.

PowerPoint team - actually speak to your Enterprise users!

The biggest disaster for me is the new powperpoint cannot crop an inserted object.  We insert a lot of objects from different softwares into powperpoint slides.  This is so convenient in PP2003.  We can double click the object and edit it in its generated sofwares.  Now the "smart" powerpoint team absolutely blokced this function!  What are they actually thinking?  Also the fonts messed up when copying some objects into Powperpoint, which never happened in 2003 version.   These two "upgrades" made the use of powerpoint so akward for us.  The worse thing is that so many light or non-professional users upgraded to PP2010 for some fancy-looking features.  We are forced to upgrade so that we can open those files generated by new version.  All my collegues complain about PP2010, but we can do nothing. Now I have to have two computers in office.  One for PP2003, one for pp2010.

I just want to ask:

Why?  Why we cannot crop an inserted object in Powerpoint 2010 as we could in 2003?  WHY??????  Any benefit from disabling this function?????????????????????????

I'm not speaking for the PowerPoint team here just guessing ...

In 2010 fantastic picture cropping tools were introduced that really do what most professional users need. I guess the team thought that virtually no-one needed to use them on OLE objects and didn't include it.

It's always annoying though when old features that were important to you stop working and it's hard to accept that your important need only applies to a tiny minority of users.

I can already hear "Why should I pay to put back features I already paid for!" but i think it would be possible for a specialist programmer to add a crop inserted objects feature to the ribbon if it's really important to you.
