Using 2003 [Compatibility Mode] files in 2007 - Very Slow to Open, Insert Cells, Copy Cells, Undo, etc.

I am using Excel 2007 to edit Excel 2003 files. Files open in [Compatibility Mode], but are very slow to open, or use. For example, just to insert a row takes 30 seconds, copying a cell takes 20 seconds. When I use files originally created in Excel 2007 .xlsx, this problem does not come up. Please help.
