Open Excel files in separate windows

I'd like to be able to open files in separate windows, so I can compare them side by side. (I have two monitors, which makes it easy to view.)

Some of the Google links explain  how to do this by modifying the registry. But I'm apprehensive about modifying the registry. Is this a reasonable and safe way to do it? Is there a better way?

Thanks.

Answer

I think I see the problem now. The way that I normally open Excel is to click on the Excel icon on the task bar. Till recently I was using Windows XP, and clicking on the icon woudl open another session of Excel. (Or possibly the same instance but a new document window - I don't have a clear recollection.)

But now, in Windows 7, when an Excel session is already open, clicking on the Excel icon in the task bar does not open a new Excel session or even a new window. But I see that if I start Excel from the Start menu, it does open a new session.

So I think that solves my problem. Thanks for helping me work through it.
