2003 MS Word Add-in problem

When I open any MS Word document I get a File Conversion Box saying "select on coding that makes document readable. I then get a box saying this add-in template is not valid. ~$ALMAPP.dot. is the problem add-in. I do not know how I got into this problem.

How can I eliminate this problem?

Bill

Close Word and locate the Word startup folder - If you have not changed the preferred startup folder it can be located (in English language versions of Windows) by typing or copying

%appdata%\Microsoft\Word\Startup

into the Windows Explorer Address bar and pressing Enter.

Remove the file ~$ALMAPP.dot and also PALMAPP.dot (if present) from the folder.

This is an add-in that frequently causes problems and the first named file is its lock file orphaned following a Word. crash.

Graham, thanks for the information. I tried your suggestions, but my Start up folder is empty. Must have changed it somewhere along the way, so, couldn't do much.

I appreciate the help. Any ideas how to get around the empty start up folder?

Set your Windows Explorer to display hidden files then search the C drive for "*ALMAPP.dot" (note the leading asterisk which doesn't display well here)

Graham, thanks for the follow up. I tried, but did not come up with the *ALMAPP.dot file.

Have a friend coming over to see if he can help. We will probably really screw it up!

Again thinks for you assistance. Hope I can return the favor sometime.

Regards,

Bill
