Autopopulate "To" field stopped working

After updating to Windows 8.1,Outlook (2003) when I create a new email it shows the contact when I start typing, but I can no longer click on the name and auto-populate the "To" field.
If I manually enter the email address, send the email and then create a new email, the same email address still can not be clicked on to auto-populate the "To" field.

Hi!

I have the same problem too!

For me this doesn't work when I use Word as the email editor. When I use the Outlook editor, it works so it can be a temporary workaround. I would prefer to use Word to edit my emails though. Hope this can be resolved.

Cheers!

Your workaround does bring back the "auto-populate" function. It would be nice if there was a permanent fix but I will not hold my breath waiting.

Thanks for your workaround.

Also the exact problem I'm having. The workaround does work, but really we should be able to use Word and not Outlook to edit our emails if we want, and still have autocomplete! Any genius' out there come up with a fix?

Same here, workaround works fine. Doubt if MS will fix this introduced bug but glad for the workaround tip.
Thanks Haak

Thanks so much - undoes forced opening of WinWord form Outlook and appears to speed up Outlook generally.

I'm not sure I ever used full Word functionality for e-mail replies

I'm having this issue too... Is it just me, or does anyone understand how an O/S upgrade can introduce a bug in a previously running OK application?

I can understand how it may have exposed an existing bug, but obviously it was working fine on systems running Windows 8...

I also have this issue, and it drives me nuts!  And yes, it worked fine with Win 8, but the upgrade to 8.1 started the misery!

I use Excel 2010, PPT 2010, Access 2010, but truly hated Word 2007 and Outlook 2007, so I chose to stay with Outlook 2003, using Word 2003 as E-mail editor. It now seems that Microsoft forces me to go from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2010.

Why do I not want to use Outlook 2010: Because the maileditor in Outlook 2010 still has not the autosuggest function: typing a phrase and accepting the autotext-suggestion which pops up in a light-yellow box. I also hate the fact that animated GIF's are not animated anymore in Outlook 2007 and later versions. Well, I could live with that, but I really hate the fact that the autosuggestion feature is missing.

It dissappeard in Word 2007, and came back with Word 2010, but NOT in the Outlook 2010 editor (which does NOT use Word 2010). What a shame!!!!!!!!

I've just spent an afternoon trying to find a solution to this as well.

Exactly same problem auto-complete/suggestion doesn't complete after Windows 8.1 update (which I didn't want)

Changed from Word editor and it looks fine.

Thanks for you post and solution.
