Can't download movies, Surface 3, Windows 10

I can't download a purchased movie so I'll be able to watch it when I don't have WiFi.  I'm not getting an error message... it just won't download.  And the tech people at MS keep transferring me to another "specialist" and keeping me on hold... pretty useless.

Any ideas?

I am having the exact same problem. Purchased movies won't download on a Surface 3 with Windows 10, and as you say Microsoft Support seem unable to handle this!

I click on download and it registers the click (you can tell from blink of the writing when you press on it) but nothing happens after that! No error message etc. nothing. It just doesn't work on any film I have.

Thank you TamRain for your contribution,

Did you try to watch the movies online on http://videos.xbox.com in your web browser?

Did you also try to download them on a different PC?

Did you also tried to create a different user profile on your Surface 3?

Kindest Regards,

Jurgen G.

Thanks for the reply Jurgen.

The issue is with downloading purchased movies, the streaming works fine (either in app or via the website...though we should stick to talking about the app here to stay on topic)!

Signing in with a different User Profile would mean buying a movie under another account, which I'd prefer not to do...

I cannot download movies on my desktop PC either, so I don't think it is related to the Surface 3 but rather the Microsoft network services!

I eagerly await and appreciate your further assistance in this matter.

Hey. A few clarifying questions so that we can investigate:

OS build? Are you Insiders? Desktop or mobile? Are you running the latest version of the app (3.6.1239.0)? Are you blocked from downloading all the time or just intermittently? Are you blocked from downloading all of your movies or just specific ones? Neither of you get an error code? It just fails silently?

I too had the same issue. I rented a movie 4 times. The first time I rented and selected download for offline viewing and nothing ever came up. After contacting support and got no help I rented it again and the download button appeared but never did anything. I did this another 2 times with the same results. I contacted them and finally was at least able to get a refund but I wanted to rent and watch a movie not on WiFi but no one could help.

Hi Ellen,

I am not an insider and Windows 10 is fully up-to-date.

The app build of 'Film& TV' is 3.6.1239.0.

The download function simply never works - there is no error code; you just click download and nothing happens (so fails silently as you say). This is the case for all movies and TV shows I have of which there are quite a few to test!)

Many thanks for your help - as you can imagine this is a huge issue for many of us.

Can you or anyone at MS help us? Is there any update on this issue at all? I have started using iTunes but would very much like to at least be able to download all the movies that I have already purchased via Microsoft. I have the issue on my surface 3, surface pro 3 and iMac running windows 10 in boot camp. Please help!

I have the exact same issue with a similar experience of talking to a MS agent on the phone with no answer.  Did get a refund.  Happened on each of 3 movies I've purchased for download on my Surface Pro 3.  Glad I'm not alone with this issue, but concerned with the support level from MS.

Same issue- 2 different machines...  eating up bandwidth for no good reason.. it gets to the end of the download (5149.6 MB) - then sits there for hours- then either the machine goes to sleep or I go to sleep or give up -  lather, rinse, repeat... hoping I can get my money back.  i rented these movies to watch on a plane - going to be in the air for 10+ hours...

The only way I've been able to get this to work on my Surface is by switching to a different user account on that machine. I have two user accounts on it: (1) the original account I used to set up the machine, and (2) a second account added later.

When you first run the Movies and TV app it auto establishes that machine as one of the devices in your Microsoft Account connected to the Movies & TV service. For some reason the Movies & TV app would never make this connection in the first account but in the second account it did.

There's some weird user account bug thing going on that could be affecting this.
