The fix has been out for a while, it went out before El Capitan was released.

Office 2016 has been working fine here on El Capitan.

If I were you, I would ring Microsoft Support.  They have a procedure (which they have yet to give us!!!) they can talk you through to bring it up.

It won't cost you anything.  Chances are, the issue is that either the software has not installed correctly, or you have not yet activated it.  Call support, they should have you up and running in 20 minutes or so.

Cheers

Okay, before we Fling Computer out a 50 story window and jump out after it. 😕

Let us go through some troubleshooting issues:

  1. What Operating system is you computer using?
You can locate that in the  menu by choosing about this Mac.

Notice the System Name and version. (Report that - you don't have to send screenshot.
I did this just to show you what to look for.If you are using Yosemite, try repairing permissions and Check For Duplicate or Defective Fonts.

  2. To Repair Permissions:
Open Disk Utilities locate in Applications > Utilities.
When Window open Click on Repair Permissions.
(the first time Run Twice, to verify any false Positives which will show up, so you know what they are.) If same thing shows up every time,  that is usually a false Positive.
    Quit Disk Utility .

  3. To Repair Fonts:
Open Font Book (also located in Applications > Disk Utilities).
Now Click on all Fonts in the Left hand window.
Click any Font in the right Hand pane.
Now hold down ⌘ key and type A key (Select All)
Now Go to file menu and look for Validate Fonts and choose.
If you see any warnings or errors then you need to remove any Duplicates (keeping newest versions).
If there are any warnings about defective fonts Remove those.
Keep checking Until you come back with a Clean bill of health.
For More Detailed instructions on using Font Book Go to this site and follow directions given in page listed as "Font Book Lion and above":  My Website

Try using these measures first. And Most likely Office 365 Mac should work.

Note I: if the version of office 365 you have is 2016 The applications are not as rich and powerful as the 2011 version. 2016 is a Complete rewrite and some things have been changed or removed. Some permanently, some temporarily while being re written. If you working in a Business or running a Business it recommended to install the 2011 version  (for now) instead of the 2016 version.

Note II: I have not delved into El Capitan because I have not updated to it myself. And I read at least one disturbing report in these forums that there isnoDisk Utilities, in El-Capitan. If there is, then above Instructions should apply to it as well. As to how you fix System Permission issues without Disk Utilities I don't know.  So someone else will have suggest method if there is no Disk Utilities.

Thank you John,

I took your advice for calling support.

They advised me to downgrade to the 2011-version, and helped me with it.

It is working fine now.

But I wonder what the status of the 2016-version is: the MS-support advices to downgrade !

best ragrds

Microsoft and Apple are working on making Microsoft Office 2011 and 2016 work properly in El Capitan. It will take some time. Be patient.
I do not work for Microsoft. If you get a good answer, consider answering a question in return.
