Touch scrolling in Outlook 2013 email messages fails to operate; other Office 2013 programs not affected

Bob-SurfPro asked on
The ability to use the touch screen within email messages in Outlook 2013 suddenly failed.  I can swipe to move through the listing of messages in an email folder, but the same gesture does nothing when applied within an individual email message.  Also, I've been unable to edit draft messages from my Drafts folder.  The draft message opens, but there is no insert mode -- neither mouse nor touch allows me to edit.  What is the solution?

Please provide us more information to assist you better.

  • How is the email account configured in the Outlook?
  • Have you tried repairing the Office suite?

Repair the Office suite as suggested in the following link and check if it helps.

I have Office 365.  The repair instructions do not seem to apply.  In the Control Panel "Programs" options, it appears only a "Remove" option exists.  Do I need to remove and reinstall for any type of fix?  My email account is the default configuration for an AOL email address.  Otherwise, it works perfectly.  I recently deleted and reinstalled the AOL email account.

Hi Bob,

Create a new profile in Outlook and set it as default. To know how to create a new profile for Outlook, refer to the link below:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/outlook-help/create-a-profile-HA102749460.aspx

Now check if the you are able to work with the Outlook.

Thank you.

Should I remove the existing profile from the system before adding the new profile?  If I don't, is it permissible for both the old and the new profiles to have the same email account?

I eventually decided to REMOVE the old OUTLOOK profile and then create an entirely new profile.  At first, the new profile seemed to address the issue with scrolling.  However, as the AOL email file continued synching to Outlook, the ability to scroll disappeared.  Also, as the synching continued, there were several email folders that contained one or more corrupt emails, giving rising to synching errors.  I was able to identify the folders where corrupt email existed, copy the contents of the folder with the corrupt email to a new folder created in Outlook and then permanently remove from the AOL Internet Explorer email client the corrupted emails.  After some difficulty, I was also able to get my address book and calendar that synch with iCloud added to the profile in Outlook.  So, after many hours of work, I appear to be right back where I started from. I've had the issue of corrupt email messages in AOL before, but they have never led to this result in Outlook.  The only other data point I have is that I do have a second Surface Pro in which I also have Outlook configured.  I logged into this computer and, once the synching was finished, it report two corrupt emails and the same scrolling problem appeared, both in my AOL email account and after logging in as another user with another AOL account linked in Outlook.    Would it be worth repeating this entire exercise -- is it possible that the corrupt email on the AOL server is the source of some of the difficulty?

I'm having the same problem as Bob (no longer able to touch scroll through e-mails in outlook 2013) using Office 2013 pro on a Windows 8 laptop.

I tried both of your suggested solutions above and neither works.  Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks

Mallany:

On my Surface Pro II that had the original issue with the Outlook touch scrolling defect when viewing individual emails, I have created a second (new) account.  I gave the new account administrator rights.  Once the new account was set up, I logged into the new account and then did a clean setup for Outlook with the new user's email address.  When I use the new user's account, Outlook works fine (thus far).  When I then logoff that account and login to the my old account, I have the same issue with touch email scrolling being inoperative.

This suggests to me that there may be an issue with my AOL email account poisoning the Outlook setup, bizarre as that might seem.  That possibility is consistent with the fact that when I initially removed the old Outlook profile and then created the new Outlook profile, there was a transient period of time when the scrolling did work.

Have you tried creating a new account on the computer (new user) and then setting up Outlook with another email account?  I'd be interested if you can repeat my experience.

Hi Bob - I had only hotmail pulling into outlook 2013 when I first experienced this issue, so i don't think it's necessarily related to AOL...

I tried adding a second email account (gmail) and had the same problem. I have not tried creating a new profile (account) on the computer since mine is already setup the way Iike it. Unless Guruprasad has some other suggestion, I might just uninstall/reinstall since it seems like that would accomplish the same thing while allowing me to keep my account intact.

Thanks

Mallany,

The second user that I created was one I'd intended to create for the past month, but had not had the time to do so.  Do you have Office 365?  I'd be interested in knowing how you come out if you uninstall and reinstall.
