Outlook Mac 2011 Yahoo POP emails keep downloading to Outlook after recent update to OSX 10.9
Office Mac 14.3.8
OSX 10.9 Mavericks
After upgrading to Mavericks a few days ago, Outlook Mac keeps downloading already downloaded messages from Yahoo email account. Its set up as POP according to the recent changes advised by Yahoo (4-5 weeks ago).
Advanced settings on the account are for mail to be left on the server for 1 week, then deleted (so it can also be downloaded to my iPad and iPhone).
Any ideas??

Hey folks,
My Outlook Mac 2011 Yahoo POP issues seem to have been resolved with this suggested configuration change over on the Apple Forums:

By preventing 'app nap' for Outlook, it seems to have resolved the issues I was having with duplicate emails and timeouts etc...

I have the same issue. I use BTYahoo so a common ground must be Yahoo. I used to keep all my emails on the BTYahoo server so that I could see the full history with my iPad and iPhone. However when I upgraded to Mavericks, I had 1953 emails download
again.
The only work around I have found is to turn off all schedules and then download the duplicates every time I manually download.
The other weird thing is that I spent a lot of time moving all of my online inbox (at 50 message at a go) to a separate folder. My inbox was empty. Some of those messages would also download.
Since before downloading everything was fine, I would suspect MS needs to fix something.
Anyone have any ideas?

I think I finally fixed this. Well I didn't actually fix it, I just followed Diane's advice:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macoutlook/how-do-i-set-up-my-gmail-account-in-outlook-how-do/aece015f-1462-4005-8a3b-adf50fa2d497
It's the bit about checking for new mail on POP between 10 and 15 minutes rather than a shorter interval.
Well it worked for me. An entire day of no duplicates. If the situation changes, I'll let you know.

You can also switch to IMAP and you'll never have the problem again.
Yahoo account setup:
IMAP
Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
User name: full email address (for example, bill @ yahoo.com* or bill @ rocketmail.com*)
Password: the password you log in to Yahoo! with.
*Spaces added to emails. Forum server strips out the info.
Note: If your Yahoo! Mail address does not match your Yahoo! ID, you will need to use the beginning of your Yahoo! Mail address when you set up your client. For example, if your Yahoo! Mail address is "jim@yahoo.com", but your Yahoo! ID is "james", you
will need to use "jim" as your user name when setting up the IMAP client.

Diane,
Thanks. Almost "right". Didn't work at first but got me looking around again.
I could get to my BTYahoo mail on the Yahoo app so I knew I should be able to do it.
For me, outgoing server is:
Outgoing Server - apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Fingers crossed this is stable.
Regards,
Bill

That's a new one. Let us know if it works.
Evidently Yahoo made changes to their web browser interface that blows on the Mac.

Diane,
The sad story is that I can no longer send emails via imap using either:
smtp.mail.yahoo.com
or
apple.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
I get this message:
Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct
No matter which outgoing email choice I make.
Since imap accepts incoming and hence the duplicates go away, looks like I will use imap for receiving and switch to pop for sending/replying. Pain but I guess this is the price I pay for be an early Mavericks users. So either Apple or MS will have to
fix something I should imagine.
Thanks,
Bill

This is not just a Yahoo issue. I don't have a Yahoo account but experience the problem in both a POP account AND at least one IMAP account.
I installed Mavericks (over Mountain Lion) on an early 2008 Mac Pro a few days after it was released.
I'm running the most updated version of Microsoft Office for the Mac 2011 (Business Edition). I have a local ISP POP email account with instructions to leave mail on the server for 30 days, plus an iCloud.com IMAP account (and a few other webbased IMAP
accounts), and even though I have Outlook 2011 for Mac set to check for mail every 10 minutes, it reloads the email twice a day from at least the local isp POP account and the icloud.com IMAP account. (I don't know why it reloads only twice, since it checks
for mails 144 times a day and loads new mail throughout the day.) I have rebuilt the Main Identity, to no avail. If I go to the email accounts on the web and move out of the inbox to folders, those emails do not get reloaded (so my problem is not quite the
same as W-G's, who apparently does the same thing but still gets some foldered emails reloaded). But by the same token, they're no longer visible on my computers' or iDevices' mail programs. Yes, I could log in again through a browser and go to the folders,
but I shouldn't have to do that.
I don't know if I would get the problems in my other IMAP accounts because I do not have Outlook set to check them.
One other note. Even though my ISP POP account provides me with a DSL connection, I normally connect to the internet through my cable TV connection (reserving the DSL as a backup when Cable is down). So I'm retrieving the email over a cable connection
to the internet. I can't see how that would matter, but mysteries are solved only when all relevant information is known, and I don't know what is relevant.
I posted this behavior in Macintouch, but I suspect it got lost in the general Mavericks discussion.

Hi,
I think you and I are at the same place. We are running Microsoft Office for the Mac 2011 (Business Edition) and are both connecting via a cable. The download of emails I moved to another folder via logging in on the web to my account only happened once.
But then I immediately deleted everything on the web, and I do mean everything. I hasn't happened again since. Dupes come in but not the old stuff.
I suspect that there is bug or two in Mavericks that will be fixed in 10.9.1 and/or MS will have to fix something in Outlook 2011. It's going to be one of those, 'this only happens in rare occasions' sort of thing.
As it stand, I download via IMAP so I don't have to worry about multiple downloads, but have to reply via POP which means changing my address to the POP account. That's a pain but I can wait for bug fixes.
The odd behaviour is that when I send an email via POP, the status bar appears to suggest it is being sent simultaneously twice! This is does not always happen, is not new behaviour and has always been that way.
I think we just need to wait and see what the two software houses end up doing.
I just can't believe that you and I are the only two people in the world who have this problem.

Thanks for your comments W_G....
I've been seeing erratic behaviour with POP and IMAP on my Yahoo account (its a yahoo _ . _ com account, and I'm thinking it may be something to do with the keyring in Mavericks behaviour as another POP account (not Yahoo) just refused to connect and I ended up deleting the 'account' info in Outlook Mac 2011 and re-entering it (that worked once before and I think Dianne siggested it from memory - thanks Dianne).
Even then its behaving erratically and comes back with a request to re-enter (and save in the keyring) the password for the POP account occasionally...
So, I think the next move is to try the apple forums on Mavericks to see what I can find there. Will report back here after that!
Its causing me a lot of grief because we rely on these email accounts for our business to receive details of online bookings etc.
More as it 'unfolds' I guess...!
Like you, I can't believe we're the only people with this problem!!
