import contacts to Outlook 2016 from CSV file

I'm at the verge of giving up Outlook for another mail solution, as it seems impossible to easily import my contacts list. I have a CSV file and a Vcard file, and there is no way to import them in outlook 2016, this is crazy. In another forum, there seems to be a way to import contact from a CSV file https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Import-contacts-from-an-Excel-spreadsheet-a75f988c-f336-4694-864b-f537c2d4e2a5, why is it not possible anymore? Do you realize how unfriendly the product is when it comes to compatibility? How come?

Please help me find the right path to import these contacts.

hi rubentibi,

to import your “csv” and “vcard” files in outlook 2016, please follow the steps below:

1) in outlook 2016 on your desktop, choose file -> open&export -> import/export.

2) choose import from another program or file (for “vcard” file, choose import a vcard file), and then choose next.

3) choose comma separated values, and then choose next.

4) in the import a file box, browse to your contacts file, and then double-click to select it.

for detailed information, please see: import contacts to outlook for windows

if you still have problems importing the files, please provide some screenshots for further troubleshooting.

to post the screenshots, please refer to the following steps:
a. click use rich formatting to post your reply.
b. click on insert/edit media, and then browse the picture to upload.
c. click insert.

regards,
violet

Hi Violet,

Thanks for your answer. You are on the "office 2016 for MAC" forum, and your solution is only for windows users... If you had the same kind of solution for Mac user, that would be great.

As for now, Mac + office = lot of compatibility problems

Regards,

Ruben

hi ruben,

both csv and vcard files are unable to be imported in the outlook 2016 for mac client. as a workaround, i suggest you use outlook web app (owa) to import the contacts via the csv file, and they will be synced to local outlook 2016 for mac.

the following steps are for your reference:

  1. sign in to owa.
  2. open the app launcher tool in the top left corner of owa as shown below.

  1. click people.
  2. on the toolbar, click the down arrow next to manage and select import contacts.
  3. for 'csv' file, select "outlook 2010, 2013, or 2016".
  4. click browse to locate and select your file.
  5. click upload.
  6. wait while your contacts are imported. a successful message will be displayed.
  7. click cancel to exit the import process.

regards,

monique

Hi Violet, Monique,

I tried to follow Monique's instructions, but when I try to connect to office 365 using the mail address that I use to buy office online, here is what i get:

[Removed by moderator]

again, the password is good. It seems that buying office 365 doesn't necessarily give you access to outlook online. which is really bad.

Just to prove that I used this address to buy the product online:

[Removed by moderator]

So my question is:

How can I connect to the outllook online with the same address as the one I used to buy the product?

Cause I guess i need to use that same address if I wish the local app and the online service to be synchronized.

Thanks for your help,

Ruben

Hi Ruben,

Thanks for your reply.

To sign in to OWA, you need an Office 365 Business/Enterprise subscription.

From the picture you provide, I understand that your subscription is Office 365 Home plan which only provides the pure office client such as Outlook/Word/PowerPoint/Excel. It’s not feasible for Home plan users to sign in to OWA.

In addition, Outlook 2016 for Mac doesn’t support the following data formats for import:

1) Entourage archive file (.rge)
2) Entourage 2008
3) Entourage 2004
4) Messages from .mbox file
5) Contacts from a tab or comma-delimited file (.csv)
6) Holidays

For detailed information, please see: Known issues in Outlook 2016 for Mac

For ‘Vcard’ file, you can just double-click the file to import it on Mac. For your reference: Add a vCard to your contacts

To import .csv files, I suggest you convert them to ‘Vcard’ files as a workaround. About how to convert .csv files to ‘Vcard’ files on Mac, please contact Apple support. Thanks for your understanding.

Violet

Hi Violet,

Yes i finally figured it out with your last answer, I "opened with" the Vcard using Outlook, and now it's saved.

Thanks,

Best,

Ruben
