Error 1706 won't let me open Excel

I have Microsoft Office 2000 Professional installed on my computer.  Excel was working, but now I can't open any Excel worksheets and I cannot open Excel.  When I try I see the Windows installer wanting the CD-Rom to be inserted again.  The error message is 1706.  Can anybody help?

Answer

Its little too late to figure out what could've caused the problem. My guess is that sometime an MS update or Antivirus program or its update can cause similar problems.

Office 2000 is outdated is not available anymore, I'm sure that you might not find it on Amazon. Upgrade to Office 2010 and  that'll take care of Excel problems for sure.

You can retrieve the product key from www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ (A small software which you need to download and run) but I dont think so it'd help you in anyways as the problem is with the missing/corruptes installation file.
