Windows 10: dwm.exe has stopped working working and crashing

I think i ran across bug(s) with DWM.exe on Windows 10, it all started on Technical preview (previous builds) that i noticed the start menu sometimes had some sort of ''time out'' (that it didn't react, cortana window and Start menu wouldn't open on clicking it while it still shown the visual buttonhover effect) and now even when nothing appears to be wrong (although sometimes it still disfunctions, the start menu) I can see in WER logs that the dwm.exe is still regularly crashing, it can be several times an half hour. Because it also bothers when the start menu doesn't directly work can you look into it, i lirerally have the Windows Error Reporting window full of recent crashes of the AppCrash for short timespans.. i don't know anything that could cause it from my side and my system/drivers are integer im pretty sure of that

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. We appreciate your interest in Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Since Windows 10 Technical Preview is still in development stage (testing environment), certain features might not work in the usual manner. We are looking forward to improve it and provide the best possible customer experience in the latest coming builds.

Did you install the preview through updates or an ISO image?

I can see that there are multiple issues with the preview that can occur due to corrupt system files.

Let us run an SFC scan to fix corrupt system files.

System File Checker (SFC) is a utility in Microsoft Windows that allows users to scan for and restore corruptions in Windows system files. Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue

  1. Press the Windows button + X on your keyboard, a mini dialogue box will appear.
  2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin). You must run the command prompt in Administrator level.
  3. On the command prompt type sfc /scannow and hit enter.
  4. If everything went okay and no errors were found, restart your computer and see if the issue re-occurs.

Let us know if this was helpful. Feel free to get back to us if you need further assistance.

Did you install the preview through updates or an ISO image?

Thanks for the quick reply, I've gotten the Insider preview (build 10074) through updates when upgrading from Technical preview build 10061. Now i ran sfc /scannow as instructed and it detected no issues, after an reboot the crashes re-occur in the same manner and nothing has changed..

First of all i took all these steps (clean install) on another PC because all my files were on the one i encountered the regular dwm.exe problems at, this other system after taking it into use (having configured it) also started to get the same AppCrash with same type (offset, problem details and such) and this further proves it's not an issue caused by the system it started on for me, but something wrong with Windows 10 preview otherwise an bug.. how can i get it to work (be solved) for me as an end-user, can you maybe dispatch an Microsoft developer to here and look at it? I would also be glad to further help out diagnosing it, but at this point i'm pretty sure it's on the side of W10.

My problem still isn't solved, even though I believe it's not only me as it appears a bug with Windows 10 preview.

However since it became more clear it's not to blame my PC or something specific on my side you refrained from answerring or providing more help, while you asked me to update status yourself.

I think that's because your mentality of support engineers 'lets aim at it being a problem with the pc' and all standard response templates you use for that persists, even while there's no accessible way to report bugs to Microsoft this system still fails for that, I know windows 10 doesnt have warranty for stability since its beta but still as I'm trying it out i'd like to atleast have it usable the best achievable, with this -bug- the startmenu can be unusable for a little while but still annoying and if users cannot report bugs or simply get ignored why is there an insider thing? Please just tell me if you can determine it a bug or else what more can i try if it wouldn't be an OS bug, the goal of me is also to get rid of the issue

Hi,

I appreciate your efforts towards resolving the issue. I will certainly help you with the issue that you are facing.

You may try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. It will scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows. To run the SFC scan, refer to the Microsoft article below.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Also, refer to the steps below:

  1. Open the start screen and type "cmd"
  2. Right click on the command prompt and click on "Run as administrator".
  3. Type the following commands and hit enter after each.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Once you run these commands, restart the system and check.

Method 2: Update Drivers

Refer to the following article and update all the drivers available.

How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10

If you are unable to find the drivers for Windows 10, you may try to install the drivers in compatibility mode with Windows 8.1.

Firstly download the driver from your computer's manufacturer website and then install it.

Refer (Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

Note: This link also applies to Windows 10.

Method 3:

Crete a new User account

To create a new user account, refer to the steps mentioned in the following Microsoft link:

Set up accounts

Hope this information is helpful.

Please do let us know if you need further assistance with Windows, we will be glad to assist you.

Regards,
Sahil Bali

I have this Problem too. With the "Final" RTM, and with the insider. DWM.exe crashes 30 times a day ... screen goes black. no matter if i upgrade from windows 8.1, or do a clean install. the insider preview has this error too, but a lot more crashes / day :P i cannot even play killer instinct / tomb raider / gow ultimate on windows 10, without constant dwm crash ...

windows 7 and windows 8.1 runs great on the same system, without a single problem! so it's NOT related to the hardware.

i have the latest UEFI installed (oct. 2015) and use always the newest drivers.

i hate windows 10, so much bugs they never get fixed. every new build is more unstable .... 8.1 is far better ... not a single problem with 8.1. **** is going on @microsoft?

i and friends(!) have this problems on multiple machines. tablets, pc's and even lumia 830 (screen flashing bug). shame on you ms ...
