Windows 10 (build 9926) File Explorer freezes

I understand that your File explorer keeps on crashing.

For better understanding of the issue, please provide us following information:

1. What is the make and model of the computer?
2. Does the issue occur while performing a task or it just happens randomly?

I suggest you to follow the steps below and see if it helps:

Put the computer in clean boot

A clean boot allows the Windows operating system to launch without any additional programs or services running when you turn the computer on. This allows you to determine if computer issues are caused by a program or service that starts up when you boot the machine.

Place the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. You may follow the article mentioned to perform a clean boot.

Note: After performing the troubleshooting steps for clean boot refer the section“how to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting”.

Run System File Checker

System file Checker determine whether the issues you are experiencing on your computer are caused by one or more system files.

You can refer to the following Microsoft article to repair corrupt files using SFC tool. Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

My PC is a desktop PC, 4 GB RAM, Intel i3 processor, Intel DH61 chipset motherboard.

I have performed a clean installation of Windows 10 build 9926.

Few days ago I have changed a registry to access new clock and calenda.

Have you tried the steps provided in the above post, if not please try that and let us know if it helps.

This issue could have occurred due to the changes that you have made in registry, so I suggest you to restore the registry to its default values. If you don't know which registry key was modified, please perform a System Repair by using Windows 10 media.

Same here! My File Explorer keeps crashing, freezing and not responding so many times. I have a clean install of 9926.

I never had this issue before with any other windows versions (XP, Vista, 7, 8.1).

This Technical Preview is the most unstable beta ever.

Exactly the same problem here. I'm now running 10041 but had the same problem with 9926.

I had a look at the wait chain of explorer.exe while it was happening, I have no idea whether that will help,

10041 was installed on 9926 which was upgraded from win 8.1

Intel i7-3770k

nvidia GTX 760

ASUS P8Z77-V LE mobo

8 gig memory

2 tb hd & 1 tb hd

I fixed the problem on 9926 by disabling the wallpaper slideshow. Whenever the background/theme colors would change it caused a spike in CPU usage that caused file Explorer to freeze up and crash. After using a static background image never had the issue again. Havent had the problem at all on 10041, just a bunch of others.

This worked for me.

This didn't work for me, at first...

The problem kept occurring even with slideshow turned off, until I selected the single desktop background under 'Windows' in Desktop Backgound.

It seems that, at least for me, the problem only happens when there is more than one picture in a wallpaper folder, regardless of whether the slideshow is stopped.

Once changed, everything's running fine.
