Realtek audio on 10041 no DTS Interactive

Updated to Windows 10 build 10041 and had to reinstall the Realtek audio drivers.

Unfortunately the DTS Interactive function of my sound chip no longer woks and I can only output DTS audio and no longer Dolby Digital through my optical connection.

Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe

Audio: Realtek® ALC898

Hi Randy,

This sounds like a case where your PC-specific drivers aren't working 100% in Windows 10. That DTS menu is something that is added by the manufacturer of the machine, and often the update packages from Windows Update don't contain those components. In theory such update packages should just upgrade the specific driver pieces and leave components like the DTS menu untouched, but sometimes we see version incompatibilities that look a lot like what you're describing.

So the short version is... It'd be nice if you could have working audio and DTS in Windows 8.1, upgrade to Windows 10 and see have everything working. This is how it happens most of the time. When it doesn't work, Windows Update should give you the updated components that you need and everything then works. When this doesn't work, you should be able to get a Windows 10 driver package from the manufacturer that puts everything (DTS included) in place correctly.

It sounds like you've been through all of those scenarios without success.

What kind of PC are we talking about?

Thanks!

Thanks for the data, JimBob.

We're pretty sure the part about the test sound only working on left and right speakers is a bug. To be sure I understand this:

1. You have an Onkyo TX-NR626 with 7.2 speakers

2. You are connected with digital optical (TOSLINK) from your sound card to the receiver

3. You are configured for DTS

4. Test tones only come from front left and front right

Did I get that right?

As to the 7.1 settings... Windows still supports this, so I'm not sure why you aren't seeing it. Can you post a screen-capture of the relevant settings tab?

Thanks!

It sounds like you're not on 10565 yet. Open a Command Prompt, you should see something like this:

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10565]
(c) 2016 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\>

Note that the build number shows at the end of the first line.

Thanks!

anything I can do to get it?

when I check for updates in windows update, it finds nothing

edit, i just saw that i wrote this with my other account (i made a new account for windows 10 for what ever reason)

this is still from "steffenreutzer"

Hi John!

Been reading through all these 17 pages forum and I am thankful for finally having found a solution (and yet still not a solution for me).
Here's my question though. I am Danish and I wish to keep my Windows 10 in Danish - It is just not possible to get the Build 10565 in Danish. Do you know when it will be released with Danish language? I am sadly not able to fix my sound before then as I am not prepared to reinstall all apps and software on my PC.

Thanks in advance.

I'll send you some Carlsberg your way if you find me a solution (I read you like beer)!  ;-)

Updated News:

Just installed Insider Preview 10576 (Was having issues installing 10565).

I'm super happy to report my DTS sound is now WORKING! Logitech Z906 speakers now show Decoding (meaning they are receiving raw audio out and then decoding what they are given).

I can set DTS in the sound options for my onboard Realtek and don't get an error. It plays the test tones in stereo. If you choose supported formats and then test DTS it plays all speakers. Don't forget to turn off DTS connect though, as it'll up your stereo sounds to 5.1 and water the **** out of it. Not great for music.

Tested working 5.1 sound on Battlefield 4 (Oh the glorious sounds of choppers flying all around me!!!)

OH THE GLORIOUS SOUNDS OF SURROUND SOUND!

Thanks to the team for working on this issue for us. Thanks for the team for keeping us in the loop the whole time!

Enjoy your surround. Still waiting patiently for Microsoft to make it available in multiple languages.

I'm an audio guy, unfortunately not an install guy. :-) There are some good threads elsewhere on the subject though, could you check those out?

Thanks!
