Question

res://ieframe.dll error in IE 8

I just moved from IE7 to IE8 (so far big mistake); I'm still on Windows XP, and have been getting the following error message when attempting to access barnesandnoble.com:

res://ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm#barnesandnoble.com,http:www.barnesandnoble.com

I have received the res://ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm# with several websites, but not all.

Any suggestions, or do I need to go back to IE7?

Answer

Hello, ssifan

Thanks for posting your question. This is a Windows Vista support forum but I’ll be happy to offer some suggestions that might get you pointed in the right direction. If these suggestions do not assist I would recommend checking Windows XP specific resources:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb <Link to KB>
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp <Link to Windows XP home page>
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/usingwindowsxp.mspx <Link to Windows XP ‘Help and How to’>
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups.mspx <Link to Windows XP newsgroups>

Since the tabs are crashing when you go to that and other websites, you may have a bad install. You can try uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 and re-download and install it again.

If you got it through Windows Update, try downloading the stand alone installer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx

If you used the stand alone installer, try Windows Update: http://update.microsoft.com

I hope this helps.

Thanks, David.  My webhost recommends uninstalling IE 8 and reinstalling IE 7 or switching to another browser like Firefox.  Apparently websites like I mentioned in my original post contain scripts (such as horizontal text scrollers) that are not yet compatible with IE 8 even in compatibility view.  I will try the uninstall/reinstall first before switching to another browser.  ssifan

I'm getting the same problem with IE8. Sites that used to work with IE7 are now crashing and giving me the res ieframe.dll acr_error.htm message. Is there anything that Microsoft will do to fix this?

So how do you remove IE 8 and go back to IE 7?

Hi Debbie,

My issue was IE8 was corrupt.

To uninstall IE8 (if not available in Add/Remove Programs)
Go to Start > Run > type "IE8" (no quotes) and click OK
Find the spuninst folder, open it and run the uninstaller
This will require a restart and revert the PC back to IE7
I did this and confirmed I had no issue with IE7.
Then I re-installed IE8 (said NO to suggested sites and install updates) and still had NO ISSUES.
The re-install fixed my issue.
Facebook was not fully logging me in and giving an ieframe error in the address bar using IE8.
(send error to Microsoft popup)
Firefox 3.5.3 worked fine without issue.
It is possible IE8 got broken when SP3 was installed for XP.

Hope this helps,
James

This error can be caused by serveral things. We have an application that runs through a window in IE that required the MS VM java to be the default. With IE8, this no longer works with the application, therefore, with it being the default, it wasn't working on other sites either. So we needed to go to tools, advanced and set Sun JRE as the default.

I did run across 2 cases this morning where sun JRE wasn't even installed. So we installed it and then still were having a problem with pages, so I tried to download an updated version of flash, but got this error on the flash page as well. So I did a search and ended up downloading the RC2 version of the newest flash and it is working fine now.

Hope this helps!
