Question

IE8 Auto Complete not working

I have upgraded to IE8 but now the Auto Complete feature will not work.  I have gone to the Tools, Internet Options, Content, Auto Compete and checked the settings there, there is a check mark next to Address Bar, Browsing history, Favorites, Forms, User names and passwords on forms, and Asl me before saving passwords.  I have tried removing the check marks, re-booting, and puting them back, no change.  I have looked on the internet for help and on this site and found nothing that helped.

Hello DBSlacker,

Thank you for posting.  I've included some steps on how to reset IE below.  This should resolve the issue.

Please let me know if this helps.

To reset Internet Explorer settings manually

1.

Close any Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.

2.

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.

3.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

4.

Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

5.

In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

6.

When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, click Close, click OK, and then click OK again.

7.

Close Internet Explorer.

Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.

Notes
  • If you close all visible windows, but still get an error message when trying to reset, you might have programs running that are not visible. Restart Windows, open Internet Explorer, and try resetting again.
  • To back up your home page or home page set before resetting Internet Explorer defaults, see Back up your home page or home page tabs.
  • If any of the categories fail to reset, it is because Internet Explorer could not access a file or registry setting. This can be caused by insufficient security privileges, files or settings being used by another program, or low memory or high CPU usage. You can either continue to use Internet Explorer without restoring these settings, or restart your computer and try to reset again.
  • If you are using Internet Explorer on a server and have turned off hardening (stronger security settings for use on servers), reset will go to client level security. You must reinstall hardening if you want the increased security level.
  • To re-enable add-ons, see Internet Explorer add-ons: frequently asked questions

I had the same problem. Got it fixed by change following registry key to 1

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel\FormSuggest.

I have the same problem. Since instaling IE8, IE cannot remember my internet (form) passwords, not even those IE7 had stored. I have not reset IE but I have tried after disabling all add-ons and also by running IE without add-ons. I would think resetting would not help as disabling does not work, and as the problem occured immediately after upgrading to IE8. Am I wrong? What subkeys should I expect to find under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms"?

You won't see anything that way. One approach to looking for
AutoComplete data is to use PSPV (from NirSoft).

Good luck

Well, actually I was not intending to see the passwords themselves. Was just thinking I was missing something and that adding it could get the forms passwords to work again. Under IntelliForms I have the values AskUser (set to 0) and PSMigrated (set to 1). I have two subkeys Storage1 and Storage2, containing the actual form data, I suppose. Not sure which one should contain passwords. I am just trying to understand why I cannot get passwords to fill in automatically into forms. I have tried emptying the passwords from within IE8 AutoComplete without success. "Forms", "User names and passwords on forms" and "Ask me before saving passwords" are all ticked.

Not likely. In fact, I think that Intelliforms is probably obsolete.
PSMigrated=1 could indicate that, suggesting that all
Protected Storage variables are now managed by lsass.exe

E:\>tasklist /svc /fi "Imagename eq lsass.exe"

Image Name PID Services
========================= ====== =============================================
lsass.exe 636 ProtectedStorage, SamSs

If you're curious about the implementation you could Run... ProcMon
to trace what PSPV does. ; )

Good luck

I was having the same problem and finally was able to discover that IE8 has a feature called INPRIVATE. When you install IE8, it will automatically set it to block saving form and password data. You need to turn it off in order to be able to save form data and passwords. At the bottom right of your IE windos there is an icon of a lock with a green arrow, pull down on that and select off and that should solve the problem.

Irecinos,

Thank for the suggestion, but it appears there is no such lock or arrow on the sites I have the problem with.

1º - RUN IE8 AS Administrator. *
2º - Go to Internet Explorer Menu/Tools/Options/Content/AutoComplete/ click Settings.
3º - Check the all the options that you want.

* To RUN IE8 as Administrator, go to Start menu, type Internet Explorer. When the Internet Explorer shortcut appears in the programm list, RIGHT-CLICK and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. Confirm this option in the message box that will open and that´s it.

Thanks Eliezer, but it does not help. Auto complete works fine on some sites but not on other. I have also cleared form data, passwords, cookies, history and temp files and tried again. Does not work. IE7 worked fine on all sites. Upgrading to SP2 did nothing.
