Question

Disappearing downloads

The problem I'm having is that when i download absolutely anything from the internet (applications , music etc) the download dialogue box appears and downloads the data then the copy phase will try to copy from the temp folder to the destination folder ( I always use the desktop for this). Then for no reason the file appears briefly and then disappears never to be seen again. When I run a search for the item it can't be found in any folder or directory and it appears to have been deleted . my system has windows vista home premium OEM as an O/S , AVG internet security as anti-virus and firewall with Spybot search & destroy for malware.
I have never had viruses , malware or any sort of problem in that dept. as i'm savvy to the internet and the threats involved with being online. I use internet explorer 7 and firefox as browsers and the same problem exists with both , but if i run the program as admin the problem seems to be intermittent , I'm not convinced that running any browser as admin is the safest way to browse . Can anyone shed any light on this annoying problem? The problem also occurs when downloading updated drivers etc using windows update and solution centre ,both browsers do the same they appear to download the file but it disappears after 1 second or so.

I can now give you the full solution to my problem , after contacting AVG tech support they instructed me to uninstall the program and re-install in a particular way , I downloaded the newest installation files on another pc , saved the file to a flash drive and then uninstalled the program ,then I ran the new installation files , when prompted to either use a standard installation or a custom installation I chose the custom option and installed one core component at a time checking the results every time by attempting a download , all was going well until i got to the Microsoft office plugin and this was the offending component of AVG that was stopping my ability to download files from the internet . hope this will help you if anybody else gets this problem . The problem is definatley with AVG antivirus software I changed DEP settings and this made no difference at all , so I have now changed DEP back from all programs to windows programs and essential services only , I have a simular thread on the answers site you can view it here http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistaprograms/thread/6753f1b0-bac9-4854-9fb3-3144fff48556

Hi Brian,

Would you happen to have installed "cleaning" software?

Does it make a difference if you try to save on a drive with another name (like a USB stick)?

Kind regards

Hans

Hi 26sw905,

Thanks for using the answers.microsoft.com Vista forum.

The information you have provided has been very clear, but, there are a couple of questions and actually a suggestion before I'm certain of what is taking place.   I'd like to have you check the DEP attributes for your system.  I want to verify whether the system is set to allow only essential Windows Services to download or will permit them and restrict them on only the ones you select.

Here are the steps to follow to check this attribute.

  1. Click Start ORB / Control Panel
  2. Click Advanced System Settings - from the right hand side.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Under Performance, click Settings.
  4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then
  5. If the attribute is set to TURN ON DEP FOR ESSENTIAL WINDOWS PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
  6. This may be your issue.
  7. Remove that and  click on  Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.  (keep in mind you can add any type of programs that you do not want to be downloadable by using the add button on the bottom of the page, so remember this allows all programs by permitting this mode)

Please let me know if this resolves the issue or if further assistance is needed.  Be watchful when dealing with this attribute, be certain your virus scan and all the definitions are up to date as well as using any trusted malware software to keep your system protected from any uninvited files from executing.
