I am trying to use Windows XP backup to backup my desktop folders singly to a remote hard drive. I used to have a proprietary backup program but I did not trust it and so have decided to use the Windows backup. I went into Start and typed ntbackup.exe into run. I had to load the backup from the Windows cd but now the program starts. I follow the Wizard into the advanced section where I choose my backup preferences. At first I chose the normal backup to backup all of mypictures but after it showed me that the backup was going to take 2 days and many hours but I left it all day to do its stuff thinking that I could continue the next day until I had finally got it done. Today I chose the incremental backup thinking that it would differentiate between what had already backed up and what remained to be backed up but I now find that incremental back ups will only backup changed files. I endeavoured to understand which of the other options would cover my needs to reflect what is on the desktop to what is on the remote hard drive but I cannot! I admit to being a silver surfer but usually with help i can get the job done. Help?!

Error code not listed in known codes, but seems to be related to a service that has shutdown. The service does NOT startup when the system is rebooted. What system needs to be restarted, and what Windows XP commands restart it?

I've been restoring a dell dimension 4700 with windows xp and lost sound .I've tried all the suggestions from the community. Then I decided since I still had

no sound after a wireless mouse install (my Mothers Day gift) I ran the restoration disk again. I upgraded I.E. version 8, and added Malawarebytes, AVG,

Search and destroy, and was planning on adding avast, and the babylon search and tool bar took over.I ran all the scans and went into the registry keys

by typing REGEDIT and opened the CURRENT USER, MACHINE KEY, OR SOMETHING TOTHAT EFFECT and found babylon search and toolbar, and hit delete.

I have written all the exact stuff I did but I left that at home. I also have kept all my community responses in my e-mail, for future reference. The problem I 'm having

now is I.E, keeps crashing I get error messages. Thats wh y I haven't got the avast. The spybot discovered the babylon tool and supposedly fixed it.

My daughter's laptop is a Dell Latitude D610 with a 40 GB hard drive. I have tried running the Windows defrag, as well as some very goo others, to no avail. It still shows 42% fragmentation. I have cleaned it out, ran spyware/malware scans, cleaned up the registry, and it currently has 61[% free space remaining on the c: drive, but still no go. Chkdsk found no errors.

Despite being so fragmented, the Windows defrag claims complete after about 5 minutes.

The only thing I can think of to do now is restore to earlier date (if there is one) or clean install. Any other ideas?

frequent freeze-up and black screens

I am getting about two or three black screens per day. Sometimes it lasts a minute or two, then go back to whatever I was watching, and sometimes it just stays black and I have to reboot. I'm running XP Home Edition 32 bit with Service Pack 3 on a Dell Dimension 9150. My browser is Internet Explorer.

I see several answers to the question of Vista users getting this error message when they try to update. I have XP SP2 and want to make sure that following these instructions (from another answer) would also apply to XP:

Please try the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try again.

I am having problems installing the May 8 .Net Framework critical patch KB2604092 on my XP/sp3 system. MSU said it installed successfully, and the MSU Update History confirms this, but when I do a Custom Scan at MSU it keeps offering this update again.

So I called the free phone support # for MS security updates (1-866-PCSAFETY), and the tech informed me that if MSU said it installed, and if KB2604092 was listed in my Add/Remove Programs (and it is), then I could hide that offer to re-install at MSU. So I did that.

But Belarc Advisor continues to say it is not installed. I ran QFEcheck.exe, and it did not find this patch either. Furthermore, all the file versions/dates I have do not correspond to the ones listed here for KB2604092:

For example, all the GDR Service Branch files that should be version 2.0.50727.3634, are actually 2.0.50727.3625, or 2.0.50727.3623, or some other earlier version.

So do I have this wretched patch installed or not?

After using the Microsoft Fix It Center I ran the audio system and since then I keep getting the most loudest noise and it will not go away. It has something to do with the Windows Media Player not being my default. Have no idea what that means.

System Restore not restoring to earlier date.

When I try to perform a system restore, I'm given several dates in bold, as usual. I choose one, the computer goes through the usual shutdown & startup,

but comes back and says it couldn't restore to that date. I try another date, same result. No matter what date I choose , the result is "no action taken".

A check under properties shows the drive IS being monitored. How can I get it working again?

Plugged usb drive into pc.

PC detects a new device. It is listed in "My Computer"

When I go to Start (cmd and enter

Command prompt comes up

when I type "diskpart" and enter

diskpart window (or directory) comes up

when I type "list disk" and enter

I see a list of drives. Both are internal drives installed in the pc

however the pny attache 8G usb drive is not in the list.

The a: drive and cd drives are also not show on this list.

Hi all,

I am trying to fix this problem on my home computer which my parents use for emails. They use Outlook Express 6, (because my Dad finds Office Outlook too complicated!) and keep getting this error message whenever OE6 is started/trying to send/receive:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'Philip Edwards - BT Yahoo! Mail', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

OE6 keeps downloading the same 3 messages, gets to the 4th and then this error message pops up. It seems to be able to see how many messages it needs to download, because the number its out of i.e. message 2 out of 13, keeps going up.

I have looked on various forums, and none seem to have exact to this problem. As far as I am aware, anti virus software hasn't been updated (its McAfee Security Centre) and they have had that for ages. Internet connects fine, so no issue there.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? Please keep replies simple as, although I am technically minded, I don't understand most of the jargon.

The treasurer is retiring and has all the accounts on her computer. She runs win office and uses excel 2003 homeand uses the spreadseets etc. I am (at 84 years old) taking over the accounts because no-one else wants the job! Although I use windows XP is it possible/permissable to transfer the sccounts to my computer, preferably easily as the old mind is not what it used to be. vernonndunn @ talktalk.net.

C: drive is for system

D: drive is for documents

E: drive is for backup

After purchasing a new HDD and assign with F: drive, I copy everything from old D: drive into F: drive.

Shut the computer down; power off. Disconnect the old drive (now D). Connect the new drive (Now a copy of the old D). Power on and boot to the desktop. Enter Disk managment and make sure the drive containing Windows, the original C drive is still C. Assign the new drive as D. Reboot to the desktop. Verify proper operation.

Shut the computer down; power off. Connect the old drive. Reboot to the desktop. Enter Disk Managment and assign it to E.

Referring to following linked image, E: drive (old D: drive) is being used, I get no idea what is going on?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My windows installer has ceased working. I have tried many 'fixes' found on the net, but to no avail, and would appreciate it if someone could walk me through the solution. WinXP, SP3.

In 'Services', 'Windows Installer' was listed as 'disabled'. I have changed this to 'manual'.

msiexec /unreg runs ok.
msiexec /regserver gives an error: 'An event was unable to invoke any of the subscriber'

I downlaoded and ran KB942288-V3 and got 'Setup error. Access is denied'.

I have looked at permissions in the registry, and I seem to have all permissions ok, but maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

Just recently had Windows Update and Windows Installer problems which were solved by Maurice N. When restarting Windows Installer service (again), I noticed that all of the services loaded by 'Run: services.msc' come up under Local System account. Is this a problem? Found remarks after searching online which implied that this is not a good idea. Previous setting was 'This account' Any suggestions on changing this back? I tried to change but nothing happened.

My window is installed on C: drive, and application is installed on D: drive,

I just purchase a new HDD and set it in E: drive, everything is copied from D: drive into E: drive, and would like to switch between D: and E: letter.

I have tried to switch it under DISKPART, but when I restart my XP, the drive letter keeps the same,

If I change the drive letter directly within XP, it cannot be changed, because existing installed applications are running.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I use MS Office 2003 on my XP SP3. Since some weeks ago the special Excel-icon which belongs to every XL-file is changed to some sort of general icon whereever I look on my sytem. Word-, Access- and Powerpoint-icons are all ok. When I look at Controlpanel/Folderalternativ/Filtypes and XLS the icon beside is of also of the general type and not an Excel-icon. Depends this on an update, (which is done automaticly), or can I repair this by myself in any way?

Every time i try to download xp service pack3 i get a copy error in relation to a file called "beethov9.wma". It says "cannot copy file to destination directory. Click Retry to retry or click Cancel to cancel. I click retry and i get the same error. I cancel it and get asked "do you want to continue Set Up without copying the file". I click yes and the installation stops and says "Set up cannot copy the file beethov9.wma. Any help or advice would be much appreciated as i need to download sp3 because my PC is experiencing problems each time i turn it on. I have recently started getting Stop Errors (Blue Screen of Death) when i start my PC.

The DISK CLEAN option is frozen on clearing C-Drive (estimating space). How do I UNFREEZE?

Hi

I don't know how to get back to my original thread concerning lack of sound have tried everything suggested.This computer is now an upgraded dell dimension desktop XPS service pack 3 that was given to me. Recently I was given a wireless mouse by my son for Mothers Day. After he helped install this and I had removed adobe flash player and reinstalled this I still had no audio. I have done search and destroy, removed Mozilla beta and reinstalled mozilla 12 reinstalled drivers from dell and unzipped them( Bill Smithers advice) and did system restore, went back 2 days ago when the audio was working (I believe that was suggested from a moderator and in my e-mail today) altho I tried that yesterday.

I got two responses on KB2597086 security install for excel 2003, well does that mean I can't install the update? Is this product no longer supported? Is there a patch to put in in order to install update? Am I going to get the Microsoft shield on my PC all the time regarding an update I can't install? Can I fix this problem? Can i get assistance without having to go on a question forum? Can anybody solve this problem without a $49.99 charge? Is this Microsoft's way of getting you to buy a newer version of Office? My harddisk for window OS is broken, which is C: Drive, so I purchase a new HDD, but my original D: drive become C: drive and new HDD is assigned with E: drive, I cannot restore my ghost image into new HDD, because the image is restored into C: drive only.
